The uniquely Japanese Ukiyoe genre reflects Buddhist ideas about the transience of the physical world. Japanese artist Koji Furuta masterfully captures the tranquil beauty of the "flowing world" through scenes of everyday Japanese life. The Major Arcana depict familiar archetypal figures, such as a kabuki actor as the Sorcerer and a Buddhist monk as the Hierophant. The artist chose ancient Japanese symbols for the Minor Arcana: traditional swords, ceremonial scepters, lacquered goblet bowls and coins from the Edo period.
